We are honored to recommend The Case Study Method: Anatomy and Application as an educational resource for NIS educators. The publication of this book was made possible by funding from the Freedom Support Act through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State. We hope it will become a valuable tool in the development of new teaching methods for educators in universities, colleges, institutes and academies across Russia.

The Case Study Method: Anatomy and Application is a publication produced within the ECAs Internet Access and Training Program in Russia and was produced by the American non-profit organization Project Harmony, Inc. and the Ukrainian non-profit organization Innovation and Development Center.

This book addresses not only the theoretical basis for case studies, but provides practical know-how about this method of teaching as a means to create effective educational materials. In the words of Harvard professors Howard Husock and Kirsten Lundberg, The case method of teaching is particularly suited to students in countries making the transition to democracy. Case discussions promote independent thinking, encourage the formulation and defense of personal points of view, and require cooperation and compromise to come to a class consensus. Students are given the opportunity, within the comparative safety of the classroom, to develop habits of individual initiative as well as respect for the views of others which, one hopes, will accompany them into the workplace. The case study method encourages discussion among students in order to develop their ability to evaluate analytical problems, delving into experiential activities not based solely on facts and theories. The method develops practical thinking skills for future administrators and project leaders, and greatly differs from traditional methods of teaching. In the USA it is extensively used as well for the preparation of societys leaders.

The spread of case study methodology in Russia is happening concurrently with the vibrant growth of Internet technology and distance education. This unique publication combines the experience of Ukrainian and Russian educators with innovation in teaching methodology and Internet technology, creating a powerful new tool to be used by professors throughout Russia. The case study development efforts of Project Harmony and the Innovation and Development Center will have a deep impact on case study summer school participants and their colleagues across the NIS. Concurrently with the publication of this book, a website went online, which will facilitate the further spread and familiarity with the case study method.

Through the support of such publications as this book and through support of such programs as the Internet Access and Training Program, the ECA seeks to fulfill its goal supporting U.S. long-term national interests by fostering mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. ECA academic and professional exchange programs identify future leaders and build a foundation of trust with current potential leaders throughout the world.
